About Burley

Picture
Burley is nationally recognized for its unique and effective teacher-authored curriculum. Quality literature, meaningful inquiry, and purposeful technology use are at the core of our program in all grades. Burley's curriculum is differentiated by design to meet the needs of each individual within diverse, energizing classrooms. Students read real books, write passionately for a real audience, explore meaningful questions, and create authentic work to engage, inform, persuade, and inspire others. Teachers engage in intensive school-based professional development to ensure that our instructional program is cohesive, meaningful, inspiring, and effective.

Every Burley student learns in an environment where...
  • Reading is taught through quality literature and independent reading, not through textbooks or basal readers.
  • Learning is active and interactive, not lecture-based.
  • Collaboration, creativity, and inquiry are central to learning, not add-on elements at the end of a unit.
  • Problem solving and multiple approaches build mathematical understanding.
  • Technology is a vehicle for discovery, creativity, collaboration, and empowerment.

A Stick Figure Tour of Burley School

This video was created by members of the class of 2018 a passion for stick figure animation and digital music. They used the free program Stykz to create the animations, added backgrounds via green screen in iMovie, and mixed original music in GarageBand.
