Mr. McCormick's classes dive deeply into classic pieces of literature such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, and A Raisin in the Sun. An Edgar Allan Poe author study, contemporary fiction and issues-oriented nonfiction book clubs, and daily independent reading are also hallmarks of the 8th grade reading experience. Social studies units range from an exploration of European colonialism in 19th century Africa and its lingering legacy to the Cold War and the U.S. Civil Rights Movement.
Prior to becoming a teacher, Mr. McCormick spent two decades as a journalist, working for a variety of local and national publications such as Crain's Chicago Business, Chicago Magazine, and American Medical News. He is passionate about using his journalism experience to coach young writers. Other passions include fitness, reading (of course), theater, travel, and hanging out with friends and (an extremely large) family. Mr. McCormick is a native of suburban Hinsdale. |
