Ms. Cowan brings enthusiasm and a true love of learning to her role as a second grade teacher. She enjoys working with her class of unique individuals to explore the wilds of India, tackle a variety of math strategies, and dive into fabulous books. Her passion is teaching reading, and she loves that moment when a student finds a book they can’t put down! She strives to reach every student at a personal level and to bring joy to the classroom through all content areas. Ms. Cowan has an adorable class Hamster called Fluffy who loves carrots, pine nuts, and visiting students’ houses.
As a child, Ms. Cowan struggled to learn to read, write, and even learn English. School was very difficult for her until one teacher, Mrs. Sczepanik, found the perfect book that made her a reader: The Girl With the Silver Eyes. Helen Keller is Ms. Cowan’s personal hero because of her perseverance and courage. Ms. Cowan is also inspired by her parents, who came to America in their mid-20’s, learned English, and thrived in their new home. A life-long Chicagoan, Ms. Cowan is an avid reader, game player, country music fan, adventurer, and member of the Klingon Armada (Charity Group) and the Chicago Jedi (Charity Group / Personal Growth). She is also the proud parent of a Burley graduate who is now in college studying engineering. |
